Steve Maruszewski Penn State Office of Physical Plant

2012 Hall of Fame Inductee

Steve Maruszewski is currently the Assistant Vice President for the Physical Plant where he helps to oversee a workforce of over 1,300 employees. He also leads Penn State’s Environmental Stewardship Strategy, Co-chairing the University’s Sustainability Strategic Planning Process and leading the work associated with defining and running the campus deferred upkeep and capital restoration needs. Steve is a graduate of the Architectural Engineering program at Penn State through the environmental option. After graduating he went to work for Albert Construction Association in Detroit and then transferred to STV Engineers in Pottstown, Pa. He continued to work in building mechanical systems and went on to be principal in a few mechanical electrical engineering firms. His most memorable experience was receiving general mentoring during his first year out of college on multiple hospital projects. His first major project he was assigned as lead engineer on a 500-bed prison addition, which gave him unique exposure to the prison population. This was a moment of growth because he had to confidently present himself confidently in front of governing agencies while acknowledging that he had limited experience. Steve’s career at Penn State began in February of 1995. Preceding his current position, he held the following positions at Penn State: Project Manager; Director of Commonwealth Services; Manager of Design Services; Director of Design and Construction and Deputy Associate Vice President for the Physical Plant. He believes the most notable changes in the industry have been the dramatic increase of technology, the gradual return to stewardship, as well as the return to more integrated design. Steve was led to his current role through general experience and exposure to all aspects of the industry, from design/construction to operational effectiveness as a representative of an owner. He is most proud of his accomplishment of incorporating more stewardship and sustainability in the design process, as well as improving focus on the total cost of ownership. Steve is a well-accomplished individual in Construction, as well as the Physical Plant, which is why he was awarded membership of the 2012 PACE Hall of Fame Award.
