Awards

PACE Hall of Fame

In 2005, the PACE Construction Hall of Fame was created to honor the 30 year anniversary of graduates from the Construction option of the Architectural Engineering program at Penn State.  Each year, the PACE seminar awards banquet recognizes one PSU AE graduate who has contributed to the building industry, specifically in construction.  Nominees are recognized by their peers for their achievements and dedication to advancing the construction industry and their support of education of the next generation of builders.

PACE Excellence Award

The PACE Excellence Award is given once a year at the PACE spring seminar.  It recognizes someone who actively contributed to PACE through participation in activities, engagement with students, and dedication to the program in general.

Hettema Leadership Award

The Hettema Leadership Award recognizes students’ outstanding efforts in the area of leadership and professional development in construction management. Each year, two 4th year and two 5th year Architectural Engineering Construction Management students receive the award. It is given in memory of Robert Hettema who founded the Construction Management major at Penn State University in 1970. During his building career he worked for the Turner Construction Company where he played a key role in projects such as the building of Madison Square Garden. The awards are presented at the annual PACE Research Seminar in April.

Dr. Michael J. Horman Award

Dr. Michael J. Horman joined the faculty of the Department of Architectural Engineering in 2000. A native of Australia, Mike brought a lively spirit to the AE community. Thriving on teamwork, Mike’s research focused on collaborative project delivery and design-build projects.

He pioneered green building research on the Pentagon Renovation, the Toyota Motor Corporation Headquarters, and through multiple projects with Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant. He created the Student Chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America and the Lean and Green Research Initiative at Penn State.

During his brief tenure as a faculty member, Mike became known as a respected colleague, a devoted teacher, and a committed mentor to his students. His love for athletics and Australian Football were widely known to all those around him.

The Michael J. Horman Award is given annually to a student in the AE Department who demonstrates spirit and enthusiasm for life, and who has successfully balanced extra-curricular activities with exemplar academic performance as an AE student. These qualities best represent the character and values Mikes strived to instill in his students.
