Integrating Sustainability into Policy: Implementing Sustainable Requirements for Buildings and Infrastructure
Federal, State, and local governments continue integrating sustainability requirements into municipal and provincial specifications, policies or mandates, and incentive programs. Historically, the focus has been on energy and water savings to reduce the overall energy use intensity and water consumption for buildings. However, a shift towards a whole carbon assessment has led to an increased focus on embodied carbon in building materials and the operational carbon associated with those energy-using systems. The discussion will present examples of leading agencies, states, and counties that have found a balance of environmental and economic benefits to drive toward success in buildings and infrastructure projects.
