Tim Carr Heery international

2011 Hall of Fame Inductee

Tim Carr graduated from Penn State in 1981 from the undergraduate environmental option AE program. After graduation, he joined Heery & Heery Architects & Engineers in Atlanta, Georgia, where he worked during his fourth year summer. He spent the first five years of his career in engineering systems and design. With his background in architectural engineering, he focused on heating ventilation and air conditioning within his project-engineering role. He had secondary roles within Heery working with lighting and electrical, acoustics, daylighting, exhaust systems, and central plant projects. In 1985, he was relocated to Los Angeles, California, to work on projects with Heery Program Management in an owner-representative project management role. Carr wanted to be more involved in the broader picture of design, construction and building operations so after seven years with Heery, he became a facility manager with Lockheed California Company (now Lockheed Martin) in Burbank, California. He stayed in his role as Facility Manager for two years, gaining what seemed to be 20 years of experience in facility operations. In 1989, he rejoined Heery in Northern Virginia, where he spent seven years working on a large corporate master plan for Freddie Mac in Tysons Corner, VA. Heery provided full program management services for a five-building master planned campus; from site selection to designer oversight, construction administration, and occupancy planning. Carr served as Assistant Construction Manager for Phase 1, and then was the lead Project Manager for Phases 2 & 3 of a five-phase, 15-year corporate campus build-out. It was the ideal opportunity to be involved in the entire process as program manager and owner representative. In 1995, Heery transferred Carr to lead a facility integration following the merger of two large pharmaceutical companies in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina. This responsibility included oversight of a combined team of architects, engineers, designers, project managers, and contractors to renovate space and consolidate user groups in the administrative, research, and development groups at RTP. The integration of the two companies was completed in 1999 just in time for another merger that took place in 2000. Heery’s site-based staff augmentation team continued to support small projects for the new company through 2004. Heery opened a Raleigh office in 1997 serving the Carolinas. Carr became a Senior Project Director in that office following work at RTP. He continued to be responsible for a variety of program management and facilities services projects including master planning, facility condition assessments, equipment planning & logistics, and project management He worked on programs for public schools, universities corporate clients and local governments. Carr is now a Vice President of Heery International, Inc., and the Carolina’s Area Manager. His primary responsibility is providing resources in support of programs and client activities in North and South Carolina. He is the only Certified Facility Manager within Heery and is a LEED Accredited Professional in Existing Buildings Operations & Maintenance (O+M). His primary focus is what he likes to call, ‘Sustainable Preservation,’ in which his goal is to apply sustainable principles to existing buildings and make them as efficient as possible. The most rewarding programs that he gets to work on are related to public education. Carr says, “It’s our responsibility to do what we can to provide the best environment possible so children – our future leaders – can get the best possible education.” As of April of 2014, he will have achieved a collective 30 years with Heery. He currently resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.
